How to get accepted into the Amazon Associates Program in 2026 (a real guide)

Amazon Associates approval requires more than filling in a form. Here's exactly what Amazon looks at — and how to pass on your first application.

Most "how to join Amazon Associates" posts give you the link to the application form and stop there. That's useless — the form is the easy part. The hard part is getting approved, and ~40% of first-time applications get rejected.

This is the version we wish existed when we set up the agalopa.com affiliate account. Real requirements, real review criteria, and the exact reasons Amazon rejects accounts.

The 180-day rule (the real eligibility threshold)

Amazon's official wording is vague. The practical rule:

You have 180 days from acceptance to drive at least 3 qualifying sales. If you don't, your account is closed and you have to reapply. This was changed from the old "3 sales in 90 days" — Amazon doubled the runway in 2024, but the floor stayed at 3 sales total.

Three qualifying sales means three different orders (not three different products in one order). Sales must be completed checkouts that aren't returned within Amazon's return window.

This matters at signup because Amazon's reviewers ask: does this applicant have a realistic path to 3 sales in 180 days? If your site has 12 monthly visitors, the answer is no, and you'll be rejected.

What Amazon actually reviews

When you submit the form, Amazon's reviewers (mix of humans and automated checks) look at four things, roughly in order:

1. Your site has live, original content

  • At least 10 original posts published, each 800+ words
  • Posts must be on the same domain you listed in the application (subdomains usually accepted; subdirectories on free platforms like medium.com/yourname less so)
  • Content must be in English (or whichever marketplace language you applied to)
  • No "lorem ipsum" placeholder text. No empty "About" or "Contact" pages.

The 10-post minimum is unofficial but consistent across rejection patterns. Fewer than 10 and you're below the bar; more doesn't help.

2. Your site mentions Amazon (or plausibly could)

The reviewer wants to see your content has natural product-promotion potential. Posts that benefit from Amazon links:

  • Product reviews and roundups ("best X for Y")
  • How-to guides that recommend tools or supplies
  • Niche-specific buying guides
  • Comparison posts

Posts that DON'T help your application:

  • Pure opinion / commentary
  • News aggregation
  • Personal life updates without product angles
  • Recipe blogs without ingredient/tool links

You don't need to have Amazon links yet (you can't — you don't have your tag). But the content type should make it obvious where they'd go.

3. Your site looks "real"

Real means:

  • Custom domain (not a free subdomain like yoursite.wordpress.com — those have a high rejection rate)
  • HTTPS (browser shows the lock icon)
  • Working menus and navigation — no broken links
  • About page explaining who runs the site
  • Privacy policy and contact information present
  • Mobile-responsive design (test on your phone)

A site that loads, has consistent design, and looks like the owner cares about it. Amazon's auto-screening de-prioritizes sites that look thrown together.

4. Your traffic story

There's no minimum traffic threshold in the application. But Amazon does check (via the user-agent it sees in your referral tracking and via the URL pattern of your site).

Sites with any organic traffic — even 10 visits a month from real Google indexing — get accepted significantly more often than sites that look brand-new and unindexed.

The cheat code: get your site indexed in Google before you apply. Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console. Wait until at least one page ranks for something (even just your brand name). Then apply.

The application form, field by field

When you go to affiliate-program.amazon.com and click "Join Now":

Account information

  • Payment recipient name: your real legal name (must match your tax ID)
  • Address: your real billing address
  • Phone: a real number Amazon can call (they do verify, especially for non-US applicants)

Website list

  • Add one website to start. Adding many at once raises flags. You can add more after approval.
  • Use the canonical URL with https://www. prefix (matching what's in Google Search Console)

Profile

  • Store ID: usually [yoursite]-20 for US, [yoursite]-21 for UK, etc. Pick something descriptive — this is your partner tag.
  • What is your website about? — be specific. "I review home espresso machines and accessories for beginner enthusiasts" beats "blog about coffee".
  • What products do you plan to list? — name 5–10 specific product types you'll be linking to.
  • How do you drive traffic? — pick the closest options. "SEO" is fine. "Social media" is fine. Don't lie about owning a 100k-follower TikTok.
  • How many unique visitors does your site get monthly? — be honest. Amazon doesn't reject you for low traffic; they reject you for lying.
  • What is your monetization method? — Amazon Associates is fine to pick. You can also disclose other affiliate networks; Amazon doesn't care.

Identity verification

For non-US: you'll need to provide a tax form (W-8BEN for individuals, W-8BEN-E for businesses). For US: W-9. Amazon's system walks you through this — fill in your real tax info, sign electronically.

Two-factor authentication

Amazon requires 2FA on the account. Use a TOTP app (Authy, 1Password, Google Authenticator), not SMS.

What happens after you submit

Within minutes you get preliminary approval and a partner tag ([yoursite]-20). You can start putting affiliate links live immediately.

But — your account is in 180-day probation. The full approval depends on hitting 3 qualifying sales before day 180. If you do: full approval, no further review, the account stays open forever (subject to ongoing program compliance).

If you don't: account closure email on day 181, and you can reapply.

How to drive your first 3 sales fast

If you're a new affiliate without traffic:

  1. Pick a high-converting product category. Books, Kindle, Audible, and household supplies (the cheap-ish stuff) convert at 8–15% click-to-purchase versus 1–3% for big-ticket electronics. Better for hitting the 3-sale floor.
  1. Share with your real network first. Friends, family, an existing email list, your LinkedIn. A single "I just published this guide to [whatever], here's the post" message to 50 contacts is far more effective than waiting for SEO.
  1. Use a comparison table on your top post. Conversion rate on a well-structured comparison table is 3–5× higher than inline links in body text. A free Velantio table on your highest-traffic page gets you the most attention for the least work.
  1. Don't promote products you wouldn't buy yourself. Amazon's TOS prohibits incentivizing purchases. The visitor has to genuinely want the product. If you're recommending things you don't believe in, you'll never hit the floor.
  1. Track which posts drive clicks. Most affiliates spend months promoting random products before noticing 80% of their clicks come from 2 posts. Find those posts. Improve them. Stop creating new content for a while.

The Creators API — separate threshold

Once you're approved as an Associate, you're a year+ away from the Creators API, which requires 10 qualifying sales in the trailing 30 days. The Creators API is what powers tools like Velantio for ASIN search and 24h price auto-refresh.

If you're not at 10 sales/month yet, you can still use Velantio with manual product entry — the table builder, embed, click tracking, and analytics all work without API access. The API just removes the manual data-entry step. More details here.

Common rejection reasons (and how to fix them)

| Rejection | Fix | |---|---| | "Insufficient original content" | Publish 5–10 more 800+ word posts, wait 4–6 weeks, reapply | | "Site is under construction" | Remove "coming soon" pages; complete About + Privacy | | "Inappropriate content" | Remove anything that violates Amazon's content policy — adult content, weapons, certain political content | | "Could not verify website ownership" | Add the verification meta tag to your <head> exactly as Amazon's email specified | | "Phone verification failed" | Use a real number you can pick up; Amazon calls international applicants frequently | | "Account already exists" | You signed up before under a different email. Either close the old one or apply from the original email |

A note on multiple marketplaces

Amazon's marketplaces are separate programs (US, UK, DE, FR, IT, ES, CA, JP, IN, AU, BR, MX). Each requires its own application. Approval in the US doesn't carry to the UK; you apply separately.

If you're targeting multiple markets, apply to OneLink (Amazon's tool that auto-redirects visitors to their local marketplace) AFTER you're approved in your primary market. OneLink is free, applies to existing partner tags, and saves you running separate links per region.

What we'd actually do

If we were starting fresh today:

  1. Buy a niche domain ($12/yr)
  2. Build out 12 original posts of 1000–1500 words each, focused on one specific product category
  3. Get 3–4 of them indexed in Google (submit sitemap to Search Console)
  4. Wait until at least one post ranks for something
  5. Apply to Amazon Associates
  6. Add a comparison table to the top 2 posts (Velantio's free plan covers this)
  7. Share the posts with 50 personal contacts and wait
  8. Hit 3 sales in 30–60 days; full approval lands automatically

Total elapsed time: 4–8 weeks. Total cost: ~$12 for a domain. Acceptance rate using this pattern: very high.
